I just returned from an incredible, bucket-list vacation. We began in Rome before setting off on an 11-day NCL cruise that took us through Naples, Catania, Alexandria (Cairo), Cyprus, Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, Kusadasi, and Istanbul. Each stop revealed iconic sights, many of them ancient ruins—Pompeii, Rhodes, Ephesus, and more.
It was fascinating to learn about these once-thriving civilizations and to see how their remnants have been woven into the fabric of modern life. Some places do this with charm (hello, McDonald’s at Rome’s Termini Station), while others make every effort to protect and preserve their heritage. These ancient sites serve as vivid reminders of the past and continue to draw visitors from around the world.
Standing among the ruins, I felt a twinge of sadness for all that’s been lost—beauty worn down by war, natural disasters, and the slow, relentless passage of time. (And really, don’t we all feel the wear of time now and then?) But being there also sparked a deeper reflection: What does it mean to leave a lasting impression? Can we evolve and grow stronger rather than fade away?

That question followed me home. What kind of legacy are we leaving—in our work, our relationships, our communities? Lasting impressions aren’t always built through grand gestures or monumental achievements. More often, they live in the quiet, consistent ways we show up: the kindness we extend, the values we practice, the care we give.
Just as ancient ruins tell stories of resilience, creativity, and culture, we too have the opportunity to leave behind something meaningful. Whether it’s mentoring someone, building a values-driven business, or leading with integrity, every moment is a chance to make our mark.
As I ease back into routine, I’m asking myself: What impression do I want to leave behind? And how can I ensure it’s one that endures?
What about you?
